My grandmother first read to me from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll when I was in hospital at 3 years of age. Later both my grandmother and mother regularly read this book to me and I learned to read from it before I went to school. The story fascinated me and as a shy, introverted child I wanted to live in Wonderland.
Later I would repeatedly borrow the book from my local library until eventually I was given my own copy.
When my grandmother died in 1973 I was given her copy – which had been published in 1928 and I still have it today. I also have amassed my precious collection of editions of the book, with illustrations by different artists and a large collection of ‘Alice’ inspired items.
